CJSF Information
Luther Burbank Middle School California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF)
General Information California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) is a statewide organization that is the middle school version of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF). Luther’s CJSF chapter fosters high standards of scholarship, service, and citizenship. Membership brings with it the opportunity for students to participate in activities to benefit the school, the community, and themselves. We are very proud of the CJSF students at Luther.
CJSF membership is based on grades and citizenship earned each semester. Membership is granted for the semester following the one in which the qualifying grades were earned, and is for that semester only. (For example, 8th graders applying for fall semester would qualify based on grades earned at the end of spring semester of 7th grade.) In order to become a member, a student must submit an application and qualify each semester.
The student is responsible for taking the initiative to complete and submit an application for membership on the approved form during the application periods. Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory. No late applications will be accepted. “Under no circumstances may retroactive membership be granted to a student who has failed to avail himself of the opportunity to apply for membership at the proper time.” [CJSF By-Laws Article IV, Section 3]
Eligibility is determined as follows:
1. Members qualify based on the previous semester’s grades and citizenship. Eighth grade students may apply in both fall and spring semesters. Seventh grade students may apply in the spring semester.
2. All grades earned the previous semester must be a “C” or better. A grade of “D” or “F” in ANY subject (including P.E. and electives) shall disbar membership for the semester.
3. Students must have earned 8 ACADEMIC POINTS from 4 eligible classes: Language Arts, Social Science, Math and Science. Academic Points: CJSF semester points are calculated as follows:
“A” = 3 points “B” = 1 point “C” = 0 points “D” or “F” in any course will disqualify the student from membership for the semester.
NOTE: One additional point will be given for a grade of “A” or “B” in an Honors course, up to a maximum of two additional points per semester. Honors courses include classes designated “GATE” or “Honors,” 7th grade Algebra, and 8th grade Geometry.
Courses designated “Fundamentals” or “Bridges “do not qualify.
4. Students also must have satisfactory citizenship in all classes. A CITIZENSHIP grade of “N” or “U” in any course will disqualify a student from membership for the semester.
5. Students must apply for membership each semester.
How to Become a Sealbearer (Honor Member)? To become a CJSF Sealbearer (Honor Member), a student must be a CJSF member for three semesters. A student who has been a member for three semesters is automatically a Seal bearer and will receive a certificate, Seal bearer pin, white cord, and special recognition at promotion. Are service hours required? Service hours are NOT required to be a CJSF member or a Seal bearer. Seal Bearers and CJSF members who complete 12 total hours of approved community service from the time they are accepted into CJSF are eligible to receive the Seal bearer Honor Medallion to be worn at promotion. This medallion certifies that the student has met and upheld all of the academic requirements for CJSF as well as honoring the organization’s motto “Scholarship for Service''. Service hours must be turned in by the deadline in order to qualify. When are meetings? CJSF meetings are held once a month during lunch on the lawn between the 300 and 400 hallway. While attendance at each meeting is not mandatory, it is a great way to build community and learn about volunteer programs your peers are involved in. How can I contact the CJSF Advisor? If you have any questions about CJSF, please email Luther’s CJSF Advisor, Ms. Raluy (room 601/602). Email: lisaraluy@burbankusd.org
