Fruit Crostatas

My favorite way to end the school year before we get to our last project (our annual chili contest) is to make a pie. American pies usually involve a bottom crust that has fixed sides that don't cover the filling. Crostatas are Italian free-form pies (or tarts) that don't require the use of a pie plate rather the crostata is baked on a flat baking sheet pan. Served with ice cream or freshly whipped cream, crostata are a summer-time treat that says "vacation has arrived".

The apples were delicious but I wasn't a big fan of the crust because it was a little dry. The apple crostata tasted like apple pie.

i LOVED the crostata! the crust was my favorite part. The strawberries were a little too tart for my liking.

The apples had a nice balance with the cinnamon. It would be great with some vanilla ice cream!
